As Stella Kimaro walked across the stage at Sokoine University of Agriculture, she carried more than her degree in Agricultural Investment and Banking; she carried the pride of being the best female student in her graduating class of 2024. The journey to this moment wasn’t easy, but it was a testament to her resilience, determina-tion, and commitment to excellence.

Reflecting on her graduation day,Stella shared her joy: “I was very excited and happy to accomplish another milestone in education.”Her aspirations now are as bold as her achievements. Stella dreams of becoming a CEO of her own company and a highly successful businesswoman whose skills are recognized and needed in society.

Stella credits Empowered Girls for being an integral part of her journey since her secondary school days. “The organization helped me build confidence, self-esteem, and a fighting spirit,” she said. These qualities carried her through challenges like gender bias, loneliness, and financial struggles. Despite facing discrimination and isolation, Stella’s ambition never wavered. “I had to put in extra effort because men were more favored,” she recalled, noting how she often had to overcome systemic barriers to claim her rightful place.

Her advice to young girls is simple but powerful: “If you’re determined and committed, you can make the difficult things happen. Kalaine

A Testament of Resilience and Courage.

My name is Kalaine, and I am a proud Maasai girl with dreams as vast as the open skies of my homeland. Growing up in a community where tradition often overshadows a girl’s potential.

The path was anything but easy. The cultural weight of forced marriage and the lack of value placed on girls’ education loomed over my future like a storm cloud. But Empowered Girls became the light that guided me through the darkness.

Before I joined Empowered Girls, I struggled to believe in myself. My dreams of becoming a teacher felt distant and unattainable. At home, challenges mounted, and I often felt powerless against the traditions that dictated my fate. The most harrowing moment of my life came when my family decided to marry me off. I was just a girl with dreams, but those dreams were threatened by a tradition that saw me as nothing more than a bride-to-be.But Empowered Girls had instilled in me something powerful—courage. When faced with the unimaginable,I made a choice that defined my future. I ran. For over 30 hours, I hid in the rain-soaked bush, trembling with fear but fueled by a determination to reclaim my life. It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made, but it was also the most liberating. The Empowered Girls team found me, rescued me, and gave me a second chance at my dreams.

Today, I am pursuing higher education with my sights set on becoming a teacher. My dream is no longer just mine—it’s a beacon of hope for other girls in my community who face the same struggles I did. I want to return to my village, not as someone bound by tradition but as an educator who empowers girls to see beyond societal limits. I want to help them.
